5th Grade Reading/ELA
Fifth grade students read attentively for information, quoting accurately from text in order to explain what is said both explicitly and implicitly. They discern themes and details in prose and poetry including how the characters respond to conflict and challenge. Fifth graders are expected to read a wide variety of texts to determine structure, purpose and audience. Fifth grade students are expected to analyze all elements that contribute to meaning, mood, tone or beauty. Fifth grade students have separate standards for reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language. These standards need not be a separate focus for instructions and often several standards can be addressed by a single rigorous task.
